Lance Murphy is a Steadicam operator, filmmaker, and creative problem-solver with a practical, collaborative approach to storytelling and production.
He is the founder of Schmurphy Services and a co-founder of Team Schmurphy, alongside his wife and creative partner, Laura Schmitt. Together, those two entities represent the full scope of his work: client-focused production services on one side, and original, hands-on filmmaking on the other.

FILMMAKING

Lance works as a director, cinematographer, writer, editor, and Steadicam operator, taking on the roles that best serve each project. He’s comfortable leading productions from the first idea through final delivery, and just as comfortable joining an active set to support a team, solve problems, and keep things moving when conditions are less than ideal.
Team Schmurphy serves as a creative proving ground. It’s where filmmaking challenges are taken on, original projects are developed, and collaborators are invited into the process. Anyone who contributes becomes part of the team, and that collaborative ethic carries into every production Lance is involved with.

DRUMMING

Alongside his film work, Lance is an active drummer with more than two decades of live performance experience. He continues to play with bands and collaborative projects across a range of styles, valuing the same things in music that he does in filmmaking: listening, timing, trust, and shared momentum.
Music remains a central creative outlet and an ongoing practice. The discipline of playing in ensembles and performing live informs how Lance approaches pacing, collaboration, and performance, both on stage and on set.

At the core of Lance’s work is a respect for collaboration and craft. Whether he’s on set or on stage, the focus is the same: show up prepared, take care of the people involved, and make something worth the time and effort it takes to create.
